Understanding the intersections of language, culture and society - a foundation for encouraging students in the classroom

I am a middle school Civics teacher in Central Florida and I use my training in sociolinguistics and Spanish linguistics to support students from all backgrounds gain a meaningful education. I plan on pursing a PhD in education with a specialization in race, inequality and language.

An explorer at heart - plans after graduation

I've explored a lot of things here at Emory. I've studied Japanese well past the language requirement as well as take some poetry and literature classes. I think this has helped me cast a broader net outside the field and it's been really really cool.

I think having studied linguistics, I have a little bit more concrete experience with thinking about what I'm about to say and how I'm going to say it. That makes me more comfortable in preparing to talk to patients.

Making a difference in the classroom - a steppingstone to what's next

I loved the professors. They gave me a new perspective on how language works and how it affects everybody. Studying linguistics at Emory has given me a unique perspective on the world.
