Honors Program
The Emory College Honors Program is intended to give extensive research experience. If eligible, you will be responsible for defining a project, selecting a faculty advisor, and conducting an independent research project focused on the study of human language.
Linguistics Honors
The project may consist of an experimental/observational study of language or involve a linguistic analysis of archived transcripts, recordings, or language corpora. In collaboration with a faculty advisor, the student will
- collect, analyze, and interpret data,
- compose a thesis based on the data,
- show an understanding of the relevant bibliography, and
- defend the thesis in front of a committee of three faculty members.
Two committee members must be from the Linguistics Program faculty; one of which is the advisor. The last member must be faculty from outside of the Linguistics Program.
The normal course load for participating in Honors Programs is four hours each semester of the senior year. Only 4 credit hours of Honors work may be counted towards the major requirements. Linguistics 495A: Honors Directed Research or a relevant graduate seminar is required for the fall semester and Linguistics 495B: Honors Research for the spring semester.
During the fall semester, you will focus primarily on developing knowledge of the relevant bibliography, gaining IRB approval, and collecting data. You will meet regularly with the faculty advisor to discuss the project and related research issues.
Throughout the spring semester, work on the research project will continue in addition to completing the analysis and interpretation of the data, and presenting results in appropriate written form and during an oral defense before the designated faculty thesis committee.
Joint Major Honors
If you are completing a degree in a joint major, you can choose to participate in the Linguistics Honors program or the Honors program of the joint department. Participation in both Honors programs is not allowed.
